... booth, rather than getting locked up in a crate. And here I am again she thought, back on a train. Billy grunted his “I’m bored, I want to go to sleep but you’re in my way grunt”. So Dawn scooted over and Billy lay down with his hind legs out to the side, his nose on her lap, and fell asleep. Dawn wondered why she had agreed to visit her mother and her mother’ s family in Iraq? Dawn’s mother had returned to her native homeland of Iraq when Dawn was seven years old. She has kept in touch by writing, but it’s not the same as seeing her mother’s loving smile and feeling her warm presence. In her mother’s last letter, she asked Dawn to com ...
... sat there that day watching cars go by their house as if it were haunted or something. I guess it can happen anywhere. But this snow-covered house is still a reflection of America, white on top with a hatred burning underneath. I go to a college, where the races meet every day. Colored man helps white man; white man helps colored man. Doesn't sound right ? That's how bad our society has gotten. Disturbing? Of course. But what is more disturbing is, lately when these issues of racism have come up, there seems to be impatience and annoyance. "Does everything have to be racism?" people ask. And they're always complaining that "It's just a little thing." No, i ...
... then." The next day, Bob got his second chance. At lunch, he saw Jennifer sitting alone at table looking lonely. He decided to go over and sit down beside her. "Hi Jennifer," he said, trying to be freindly. "Whats up?" "Well nothing much really. I'm having trouble making friends here." "I know, its tough isn't it," he replied, trying to comfort her. "I just moved here 3 years ago myself. After a few weeks you'll have lots of freinds though." "Thats good," she replied as she looked up at Bob into his eyes. Then there was a moment of silence with just the two of them staring into each others eyes. Then finally Bob broke the silence ...
... said. "Sure I can," Amir replied. Aaron studied the face of the Bosnian Immigrant. Amir had fought for two years in the war against the Serbs. His face was remarkably pleasant, although his eyes looked as if they belonged to a forty year old man and not a seventeen year old boy. His tan skin and wide smile seemed out of place when one took in Amir's mohawk and torn black t-shirt. "It's a handicap spot." "Exactly," Amir said with a smirk. "I got you in my car, and you're a retard." "Fuck you," Aaron said, "I'll blast you Sylvester Stallone style." Amir burst into hysterical laughter. "You watch too much television." Aaron shrugged and slowly exhaled throu ...
... is stationary drivers stare into the house through the window. Quite a lot of the time the front room can be in darkness because the trucks are so large that when in standing traffic they block most of the light to the house. There is nowhere for my husband to park his car. It is difficult to park outside the house because the road is quite narrow and the traffic needs to be able to flow freely. It would be dangerous, not only getting in and out of the car, but also leaving the car on the road since drivers have been known to hit stationary vehicles. The amount of air pollution means that I can’t open the windows because the house fills with fumes. On a dry d ...
... use frequently. I have never bought a guitar. This past summer I went back to Colorado and met up with one of my friends. He had told me before I could use his guitar any time I wanted to, so I called him up and asked if I could borrow it. He told me I could have it, because he had just bought a brand knew one. The strings and the pick guard had been taken out, so I went to a guitar store and they fixed everything for me. I was able to play it after that. I also have an Ovation guitar, which is a lot different from the electric guitar I had gotten from my friend. My sister won the Ovation guitar in a raffle, along with Melissa Efferage concert tickets ...
... and I moved to Knoxville to live with my maternal grandmother, and I often stayed with my aunts while Mom and Grandmother worked. When I was four, Mom got remarried, and we moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina. We lived in a duplex for six months, just long enough for the three of us to find a house. Then we moved only five miles away to a place I could finally call “home.” In August of 1988, I started kindergarten, at Swansboro Primary School. In October of that same year Mom gave birth to my sister Kira. In 1990, to my sister Kristy was born. The next year went on to Swansboro Elementary School, where I was involved in many plays and activities and ke ...
... the bus. Some people started crying because they couldn't do any more pushups, but still were forced to do more. You are probably asking, why didn't they just stop and refuse to do the pushups? The answer is because your parents paid a lot of money for you to go to this program. A fee of about five hundred dollars all together. That money is for the uniforms, bus ride, reserved tickets for the bunks, and money needed when on the base. After that the worn out bus load was escorted to a room with other cadets from other cities. All together there was about four hundred kids from all over Michigan going to this camp. Every camper was assigned to a spe ...
... a look of sadness. “How’s Patsy handling it?” My mother asks. Later, after what seemed to be a very emotionally draining conversation, my mother comes to me. She tells me that my aunt, Patsy’s daughter Trisha has died. I never knew her well, so up to this point I did not have much of an emotional reaction to the news. However, I knew that her death would devastate her mother. I doubt any parent takes the death of their child well, a parent never expects to witness the funeral of their child. My family is invited to the funeral, and we assure the couple we will attend. The following morning my mother, brother and I embark on the trip. It was held at Rose ...
... really changed how I thought of my life, or so I thought. The next major experience was during this school year. I went out to a party one night, and I never expected to get into problems. I had a little to drink and I guess it clouded my mind so I had a lot more. I didn't think I was drunk until it was too late. The whole night blacked out and when I awoke I was in the Hospital. It turns out that I had drunken myself into a coma and if I wasn't taken to the hospital I would have died. Although I still go to parties I am much smarter on what and how much I will have to drink. I guess the man that said the beginning phrase actually wasn't as smart or a drunk. Li ...
