In 1828 he was appointed to the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge, though he never presented a lecture. He founded the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1831 and in 1832 he published "Economy of Manufactures and Machinery". 1833 marked the beginning of his work on the Analytical Engine.
