.... Goodman Brown (1864), Brown a young Puritan, leaves Faith, his wife for a nighttime journey in the woods. Meeting an older man with a twistered staff, he learns that others have traveled the path before him. Sick at heart, he observes a witches' Sabbath and discovers the presence of his own wife. The next morning Goodman Brown returns to Salem a changed man, stern, sad and gloomy, he believes that all are cursed. It is difficult for the reader to determine if the events in this story actually took place of was it a dream 'Had Goodman Brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch-meeting?'
