.... The Panthers were formed by Huey P. Newton, an African American who grew up in Oakland. After the 1966 assassination of black leader Malcolm X, Newton gathered some longtime friends, including Bobby Seale and David Hilliard, and drew an outline for the organization. At first, it was named the “Black Panther Party For Self-Defense”, but it was shortened to the “Black Panther Party”.
