Candide himself was flogged many times, Dr. Pangloss was made a beggar and then hung, the Baron went from a man of great standing to a slave, and Cunégonde was forced into slavery as well. Candide's search for freedom ends up getting him in a great deal of trouble everywhere he goes. From Lisbon to Cadiz to Eldorado to Surinam to Bordeaux to Portsmouth to Venice and many other unknown lands, Candide finds nothing but trouble.
