In the 1850's, many soldiers from the Bengal army were alienated and lost some of their pay and prestige. There were rumors of gun cartridges being greased with animal fat from cows and pigs, which came as an insult to the integrity of the some of the soldiers. The Hindus and Muslims were offended at this attempt to pollute their religious convictions before forcing them to convert to Christianity.
