On July 13, 1848, five women met for tea in Seneca Falls, New York. The pioneer of this woman’s rights movement was Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Stanton poured out her discontent with women’s legal and social situation in such passionate terms that her friend’s .... Middle of Essay .... in court. Before marriage, women could own property, but they were taxed without being able to vote. In the few occupations open to women, they were paid far less than men were. No liberal arts college but Oberlin would admit women. Professions other that writing and school teaching were closed to women. Women could not practice law or medicine.
